Santa, With Syrup
Santa will be having breakfast at the Wharf restaurant in Edgartown on Sunday from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Kids are welcome for photos ($5) and pleading for their preferred presents. All can enjoy pancakes, eggs, sausage and home fries; admission is $4 per child and $8 per adult. It’s all cash only, and all benefits the Jim Lambert Memorial Scholarship Fund, providing financial assistance for Vineyard students enrolled in post-secondary programs.

Striped bass, one of the most prized fish swimming in Vineyard waters, the focus of fishing tournaments and the dish on many dinner tables, is in decline here, that much is agreed. But what to do about it? That is not, and the divided opinions are lining up around new restrictions proposed to protect the fish.
Denys and Marilyn Wortman of Hines Point were honored on Friday as the joint recipients of this year’s Spirit of the Vineyard award, given annually by Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard. The Wortmans’ work and community support was praised, and their sense of humor celebrated, by their friends and associates who made the atmosphere a jovial one at the celebration in the regional high school’s culinary arts room.
Calling it a test of town priorities, the executive director of the Island Affordable Housing Fund this week asked the Oak Bluffs Community Preservation Committee to commit another $400,000 to the financially troubled Bradley Square project, in the name of historic preservation.
As of the end of October, there were 65 fewer households on the waiting list for rental assistance on Martha’s Vineyard than there were in June.
On the face of it, that might seem like good news, or at least less grim news. But it’s not really, says Peter Temple, executive director of the Martha’s Vineyard Donors Collaborative.
It’s bad news, for two reasons. The first is that there still are 101 qualifying households in the line, compared with 87 now receiving help.
