The Chilmark Police Department warned Islanders to be on the lookout for e-mail scams, after several Chilmarkers received e-mails purportedly from someone in their contacts, requesting they wire money to England to assist stranded friends or family members traveling abroad.

“It’s a pretty basic scam,” said officer Sean Slavin yesterday. In these cases, the sender was posing as a friend or family member in need of money to travel back to the States. So far, no recipients have reported sending any money.

The Army Corps of Engineers will dredge a 10-foot channel in the Oak Bluffs harbor in the coming weeks, to improve navigation and provide safe access for boats entering the marina.

There was a 30-day public comment period on the plan nearly six years ago. No comments were received.

This week the Corps released updated details about the project. While the project approved six years ago called for 5,800 cubic yards of sand to be removed, the amount has now been reduced to 3,500 cubic yards, as the town conducted an emergency dredge of the harbor in 2006.

A Menemsha charter fishing boat was damaged in a boatyard fire on the mainland last Saturday. Scott McDowell said his 35-foot Duffy boat Lauren C sustained significant heat damage to her port side quarter as well as light damage to the pilot house.

The fire took place at Niemiec Marine, at Pope’s Island, a boatyard located on an island in the harbor between New Bedford and Fairhaven. Another boat was completely destroyed, while a second was significantly burned. Mr. McDowell’s boat was in proximity, but the heat from the fire was significant.
