New artists are invited to participate in this year’s annual Friends of Family Planning Art Show Benefit which takes place May 28 to 30 — Memorial Day weekend. All media are welcome.

The preview gala, on Thursday, May 27, kicks off the summer season and is a great showcase for new work of all kinds.

Thirty-five years ago, at the end of the Viet Nam war, there was a mass evacuation of Vietnamese orphans who had been adopted by Americans and other nationalities. One of the parents anxiously waiting for news of Operation Babylift was one William Delahunt.

It was a nerve-racking time. Mr. Delahunt thought his new adopted daughter was on the first flight out. Then he learned the first flight crashed.

But despair turned to joy. She was safe on the second flight. And so the Delahunts gained a daughter, Kara Mai.

There were two competing lively scenes at Offshore Ale Company’s fifth annual brewery open tour on Saturday. While Good Night Louise carried patrons to the tipsy twilight hours with jam band standards, upstairs an even wilder party raged within the walls of the brewery’s fermentation tanks. Here yeast organisms were reproducing, by the hundreds of millions, gorging themselves on sugars and excreting carbon dioxide and alcohol. And though the brewery tour only lasted until the early evening this party will last for weeks.

Fast Ferry Resumes

The express ferry between New Bedford and Martha’s Vineyard, now known as Sea Streak Martha’s Vineyard, resumes one-hour service on Thursday, April 1, 2010, with two daily trips Monday through Friday to Vineyard Haven. On April 14, the schedule adds weekend service, and on May 20 service is added to Oak Bluffs. The summer schedule begins on June 25.

Marie Allen, Simone DeSorcy and Eleanore Tompkins have joined the board of directors of Island Elderly Housing, Inc., which currently provides 165 quality, affordable apartments for the Island’s low income elderly and disabled, enabling them to lead independent lives in one of four campuses, Woodside Village and Aidylberg Village in Oak Bluffs and Hillside Village and Love House in Tisbury.
