Vacation Adventure
A five-day kids’ camp, the Vacation Adventure program will be operated by the Martha’s Vineyard Cultural Collaborative during April school break for kids in grades one to five. First organized in 2008 under a grant from the Martha’s Vineyard Cultural Council, the round robin series of engaging activities is offered by five Vineyard cultural organizations, each located in a different Island town, and each hosting one day of the wee long adventure.
Cake Walk
The second annual Cake Walk sponsored by the West Tisbury School third grade class will be held on Saturday, March 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. There also will be lots of games, face painting, arts and crafts, and prizes. Bring a cake and get a free walk.
Kids’ Art Scholarships
Scholarships for Lani Carney’s 2010 children’s programs at Featherstone Center for the Arts are available to individual children ages 3 to 10 and of all abilities. The scholarships, which are awarded at 100 per cent on the tuition, are supported by the generosity of three community women committed to the arts, not only in their individual and family lives but also through the children’s arts programming at Featherstone: Anne Gallagher, Susan Guerin and Stina Sayre.
While Disney saturates the media with ads for its Tim Burton extravaganza Alice in Wonderland, young Island thespians are sending Alice tumbling through a television screen instead of a looking glass, in a play about the absurdity of media-saturated consumer culture, called Alice in Americaland.
All Dolled Up
A doll making workshop for the benefit of Haitian children will be hosted by Pathways Projects Institutes on Saturday, March 20 at the Chilmark Tavern.
Sally Snipes will lead the group in creating a Waldorf-style cloth doll. Minimal sewing skills are required to make these soft, huggable dolls which will ultimately make their way into the arms of Haitian children. All materials will be supplied and children are welcome to participate if accompanied by an adult.
Author Tony Horwitz will emcee the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore’s open mic night for writers, the final such event of the season, on Tuesday, March 23. Anyone currently working on a novel, short story, poetry or essay is invited to read for five minutes. This is an opportunity for writers to share a selection from a work in progress and for the Vineyard community to come out and hear what their neighbors are working on behind closed doors.
