Army Spec. Wender S. Ramos has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

The 45th annual meeting of the board and membership of the Vineyard Conservation Society will take place at the Wakeman Conservation Center on Lambert’s Cove Road in Vineyard Haven on Tuesday evening, June 29. The meeting is free and the public is welcome, starting with a light supper from 5 to 6 p.m. The business portion of the meeting will begin at 6 p.m., followed at 6:30 p.m. with a presentation by Tim Simmons, restoration ecologist with the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program.

Chappaquiddick ferry company owner Peter Wells has called for bids to build a new Chappy ferry — a spare, as he calls it.

It would be called City of Chappaquiddick, named after a Chappy ferry going back 60 years, if it is built at all, Mr. Wells said.

It would look very much like the On Time III. But the next Chappy ferry might be built of aluminum, he said, unlike the marine plywood and fiberglass boats now in service.

Tennis Scholars

Vineyard Youth Tennis has selected four year-round Island children to receive full scholarships for one week of tennis camp at Adidas Tennis Camps this summer. Avery Hazell, Brian Donegan, Phoebe Dandeneau and Ryan Sawyer were selected based on essays they wrote describing their dedication to Vineyard Youth Tennis and enthusiasm for the sport of tennis. The children will have a choice of two camp locations: University of Massachusetts, Amherst or University of Connecticut.

Grace Gordon, a student leader and varsity athlete at Williams College class of 2012, has been selected to launch the Martha’s Vineyard branch of Ivy Insiders, an innovative SAT prep program that was started by undergraduates at Harvard in 2003 and has since grown into a national test prep leader thanks to the highest student score improvements in the industry.

Little League Championships

On Saturday, June 26, Martha’s Vineyard Little League will hold its championship games at Veira Park in Oak Bluffs. The minor league game will begin at 11 a.m., followed by the majors championship at 2 p.m. Come watch the real boys and girls of summer!
