Cultural Luncheon

The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living is hosting a cultural luncheon from noon until 2 p.m. at the Grill on Main street in Edgartown on Saturday, Jan 29.

The topic for this lunch is the influence and contributions of African Americans on Martha’s Vineyard.

Speakers include Carrie Tankard, Elaine Weintraub and Tom Dresser, author of African Americans on Martha’s Vineyard from Enslavement to Presidential Visit.

Three men were arrested on drugs and gun charges Wednesday after a search in an Oak Bluffs home revealed 175 marijuana plants, a shotgun rifle and ammunition, according to a press release from the Oak Bluffs police department.

Brothers Joseph DePriest, 41, and Luke DePreist, 31, face charges in Edgartown district court of illegal cultivation of marijuana and weapons violations, Oak Bluffs police chief Erik Blake said, after a search warrant was executed at their home at 2 Dreamers Way in Oak Bluffs.

West Tisbury town officials have mostly agreed that the rocks will have to go.

Members of the town historic district commission appeared before selectmen on Wednesday to denounce the large boulders in front of the recently renovated town hall which they feel are not in keeping with the town historic district.

“The rocks were an easy temporary thing, they weren’t on any official plans,” said historic district commission chairman Sean Conley. “It’s like making a cake and then putting ugly frosting on it.”
