Amanda Dickson and Matthew Parker of Oak Bluffs announce the birth of a son, Benjamin Arthur Parker, born on Jan. 31, 2011, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Benjamin weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces at birth.

The Lobster Bowl

The Patriots may be sitting out this Super Bowl, but here on the Island there will still be a bit of New England to enjoy while watching the big game.

Grace Church is opening its doors on Sunday, Feb. 6 from noon until 2 p.m. and offering up their heavenly lobster rolls to ease the pain of having to watch someone else’s teams take the field.

Dean’s List

Maureen Fitzpatrick of Oak Bluffs has been named to the dean’s list for Champlain College’s fall 2010 semester. Ms. Fitzpatrick is majoring in early childhood/elementary education.

She is the daughter of Thomas Fitzpatrick of Oak Bluffs, and Lisa Fitzpatrick of Oak Bluffs.

There’s a sense of wonder when you walk the trails at Waskosim’s Rock Reservation in Chilmark on a winter day. Dry leaves crunch under your feet on the meandering flat trails that lead you to the stream. It’s easy to be distracted by the moving water, one of few sounds in earshot, but be careful not to trip on the tree roots curving out of the hillside. Up the small stile over the stonewall, across the sheet of ice where life has stopped underneath the frozen water, be sure to take a moment to stomp your feet on the ice and create dizzying patterns.

All after-school and evening activities of the Martha’s Vineyard Public Schools are canceled for Tuesday, Feb. 1, according to the superintendent’s office.

School dismissal will be at the usual time and all buses are expected to be on schedule.

Swim lessons at the YMCA also are canceled for today.

ACE-MV adult and community education classes scheduled for tonight are canceled.
