But for those who like to get their holiday shopping out of the way now and avoid Black Friday, not to mention the frenetic pace of shopping throughout the month of December, welcome aboard.

In celebration of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum has launched a new online exhibit sharing the stories of Vineyard World War II veterans.

Those Who Serve: Martha’s Vineyard and World War II, began as an exhibition in the Museum during 2009 and 2010. The exhibit’s popularity resulted in an oral history book curated by Linsey Lee. Short audio excerpts of those interviews have now been put together with archival photos in an online exhibit allowing people all over the world to hear the stories.

Let Us Now Praise Our Veterans

On Nov. 11, Veterans Day, we are given the opportunity to take a deep, collective breath and say thank you to the men and women who have bravely served our country.

Here on the Vineyard we bear witness in many ways, beginning with a parade in Oak Bluffs. The parade recently received recognition as a special designation of regional importance from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Head up to Aquinnah on any Saturday, rain or shine, warm or frigid. Turn left onto Church street and be on the lookout for a green field. Get out of the car and begin walking along a small path through the trees. At first the woods are still and silent. Then the sounds of children singing drift in from the distance. Keep walking. The voices grow louder, there is a guitar and the smell of smoke. A few more steps and the path opens up to reveal a teepee and a large campfire.
