John T. Hughes, the former longtime director of the Massachusetts State Lobster Hatchery on the Vineyard, will be honored by the state Division of Marine Fisheries next month, which will present him with the Belding Award.

Created in 1989 to honor individuals who in the opinion of the state Marine Fisheries Advisory Commission have done the most to promote the conservation and sustainable use of the commonwealth’s marine resources, the award is named for Dr. David L. Belding, a distinguished doctor and marine biologist who died in 1972.

Please Adopt Us

The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard has such good news this week — all our beautiful dogs have been adopted. We are especially happy for Missy, the pit bull. She had been at the shelter for months and the right person just came along and wanted her. He passed all the requirements for adopting a special dog like Missy. Mackenzie has gone to a wonderful Chessie rescue home in New York state, and Riley has also gone to a special home. Thanks to all the new adopters and we hope you will all enjoy your new pals.

The state fire marshal’s office is investigating a fire that destroyed a home in the Dodger’s Hole section of Edgartown last Saturday.

Firefighters worked through the predawn hours to wrest control of the house on Mockingbird Drive that was fully engulfed in flames. The house was unoccupied at the time; the home is owned by Michael Torcia, who maintains full-time residence off-Island.

No injuries were reported, said Edgartown fire chief Peter Shemeth.
