North Dakota has come through, making it a clean sweep of donations from 50 states for radio station WMVY.

And the popular Vineyard station that was in danger of going silent after an NPR station purchased its signal, has nearly reached its fundraising goal.

"We are hoping to do it in the next 24 hours," Barbara Dacey, director of programming for WMVY, told the Gazette at press time Thursday. "We don't know. It's all up to everybody else," she added.

While elaborate plans continue to unfold for moving a large Chappaquiddick house, the Edgartown conservation commission is grappling with a new issue: whether actions taken to stem the erosion can continue after the house is moved.

For months, the situation unfolding at Wasque Point where a rapidly eroding coastal bluff is swiftly approaching an 8,800-square-foot house, has captivated the Island.

The Martha’s Vineyard/Dukes County Fishermen’s Association was created in 2009, when it was clear to most local fisherman that having an association with a voice was stronger than having a group of fishermen act individually. Warren Doty was named president of the association, but recently he informed the county commissioners that he was stepping down.

For nearly 30 years, it has solved disputes that were heading to small claims court. It has helped resolve differences between business partners, those going through divorce or custody cases, and it has even run seminars on how town conservation commissions and other agencies deal with emotional and consequential issues involving land use and planning.

With 1,300 members and the Island’s first municipal solar array a reality as of this week, Vineyard Power, the Island energy cooperative that was little more than an idea three years ago, is now a viable enterprise.

But with 8,000 members needed to make the next big project a reality — a $200 million offshore wind farm in a state-approved area south of the Vineyard — the fledgling community cooperative still has a good distance to travel to meet its goals.

Sometime last week in the evening or pre-dawn hours, a mother cat and two tiny four-week-old kittens were left on the doorstep of the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard. Luckily Janelle from the Vineyard Vet Clinic was coming to work early and found the little family and took them inside the clinic until they could be brought into the shelter. The shelter does not question why animals have to be given up, but it is cruel and unacceptable to leave them out in the cold.
