As many as 800 Massachusetts anglers have signed a petition seeking additional steps to conserve striped bass from overfishing. The petition calls for a 50 per cent reduction of both commercial and recreational efforts. As many as 30 Vineyarders signed the petition online according to Brad Burns, president of Stripers Forever, a Maine-based organization.
The combination of dry air and gusty winds will enhance the risk for fires across the state, including on the Vineyard, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency has announced.
The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement warning of the increased threat.
“Local Fire Weather officials have advised that fine fuels, grasses and leaf litter, will be very receptive for ignition. In fact any fire across unshaded fine fuels can rapidly spread in these gusty conditions,” the statement said.
The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank announced Tuesday that it has signed an agreement to buy an agricultural preservation restriction to permanently conserve some four and a half acres of farmland at Whippoorwill farm off Old County Road in West Tisbury.
The owner of the farm is Andrew Woodruff. The price to be paid for the restriction is $43,000 per acre.
Andrew Woodruff kicked at the dirt at Whippoorwill Farm on a recent afternoon. The soil felt familiar, but he stomped on it a few times to make sure it was good and grounded, twisting himself into place.
“Today is a beautiful day and spring is around the corner,” Mr. Woodruff, 50, said squinting into the sun. “It’s definitely a fresh start to a new beginning for Whippoorwill Farm.”
The spring session of the superior court opened on Monday, when a Dukes County grand jury handed down three indictments: two men were indicted on charges stemming from an alleged assault in Oak Bluffs, and a Vineyard Haven man was indicted on drug charges.
Jury selection began today in Dukes County Superior Court for the murder trial of an Aquinnah man.
Ovando Eghill, 32, is charged with second degree murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after he allegedly fatally stabbed an Edgartown man, Michael M. Trusty, on June 14, 2011.
According to police, the incident took place outside a Spring street home in Vineyard Haven. Mr. Eghill’s wife was previously married to Mr. Trusty, and both men were at Spring street to visit their children, police said.
