Meadow Arrives

Madison Ibsen and Thomas Christopher, of Oak Bluffs, announce the birth of a daughter, Meadow Kay Christopher, born on July 27.

 

 

 

Carson — Bibers

Marisa Claudia Carson, daughter of Kenneth and Alba Eber of West Tisbury and Jason Bibers, son of Robert and Grace Bibers of Manchester, Vt., were married on June 6, 2009 at the West Tisbury Congregational Church. The reception followed immediately after at the Grange Hall. Family and friends came from near and far to attend the celebration. The couple have made their home in New York city.

Beecher — Straus

Mrs. Pat Calabrese of Lake Forest, Ill., and Nantucket, and E. Ronald Beecher of Chicago announce the engagement of their daughter, Katharine Pierce Beecher, to John Alexander Straus Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Straus of Darien, Conn., and Oak Bluffs.

Best Supporting Actress

Sixteen-year-old Jessica Carlson, of New York and Chilmark, received the Best Supporting Actress Award last month from the Young Artists Foundation of Studio City, Calif. Jessica’s award was given for her performance in the role of Rebecca in the Universal Studios’ film, The Vampire’s Assistant, shown in theatres nationwide last summer, including Edgartown Cinemas. This was the 31st such award given by the foundation.

Great Job, Sarah

Sarah Ortlip-Sommers of West Tisbury represented Martha’s Vineyard as part of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra’s Youth Ensemble. Sarah, an eighth-grader at the West Tisbury School, played first violin in the ensemble’s annual concert at the Cape Cod Museum of Art on May 14.

The ensemble is chosen from auditions of advanced students throughout the Cape and Islands. Sarah is the first Vineyard resident to be invited to join. She was a mentor in the All-Island elementary string program this year.

Arboretum Volunteers

At the Polly Hill Arboretum, volunteers are very important, and as the arboretum grows, so do volunteer opportunities. On Thursday, May 27 from 10 a.m. to noon, spend the morning with volunteer coordinator Nancy Weaver, executive director Tim Boland, and other staff for an across-the-board introduction to the many ways you can become involved at the arboretum.
