A historic change is in the works for West Tisbury if voters approve the sale of beer and wine at town restaurants and inns at the annual town meeting on Tuesday night.

A petitioned article championed by the owners of State Road Restaurant, the Lambert’s Cove Inn and the Plane View calls for the sale of beer and wine at restaurants with a seating capacity of 50 or more patrons.

The Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Network will offer a $2,500 grant to a Vineyard-based business person who wishes to improve their business skills, grow or improve an existing business, or start a new one.

The grant, offered for the second year by the four-year-old network, is open to all Vineyard business people, men and women, members and nonmembers. The winner will be announced at the year’s final Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Network program on May 17.

At a standing-room-only public hearing, the Edgartown planning board this week heard arguments for and against the proposed Edgartown Meat and Fish Market at the Triangle. Applicant John Ready faced questions about competition, traffic and trash, some of them from neighboring business owners.

The owners of the Wave Lengths salon said they will go back to the drawing board after the Edgartown planning board made it clear this week they were unlikely to approve a plan to tear down the Upper Main street building and replace it with two large buildings on the property. At a public hearing on Tuesday night that saw heated argument among planning board members, the board said the new plan fails to meet town zoning requirements for parking in the Upper Main street business district.

If a group of West Tisbury restaurateurs are successful the town may join Tisbury and Aquinnah in the ranks of the Island’s formerly dry towns.

It’s been a long time since West Tisbury residents have been able to imbibe at a local establishment. In the mid-19th century, proprietor Sanderson Manter Mayhew held a license for the sale of rum at what is now Alley’s General Store, but for a century and a half West Tisbury has been dry.
