A child’s book works best when it operates on two levels, appealing to both child and parent. All the classics — Wind in the Willows, the Eloise and Madeline sagas, and Winnie the Pooh, accomplish this. But at bottom, the best books in this category impart something for children and grownups to ponder.
Island nostalgics, rock’n’roll and reggae music fans alike know his iconic images. Now photographer Peter Simon goes multimedia — for a presentation about his 40-year career documenting historic events from the protests of the 1960s, the hippie communes, nude beaches and the New Age movement, to the greatest names in pop music, the action of major league baseball, and the majesty of Martha’s Vineyard.
His talk, Peter Simon: Through the Lens, is on Wednesday, June 30, 7 p.m. at the Vineyard Haven Public Library.

Festival of Poetry
Featherstone Center for the Arts, in conjunction with the Martha’s Vineyard Writers Residency, presents a summer-long festival of poetry at Featherstone.
All readings will be held on the third Thurday of each month at 7 p.m.
This summer’s lineup includes both local and nationally known poets.
On Thursday, June 17, locals Jennifer Tseng and Clark Myers will be sharing recent and published work.
First Aid Class
The American Red Cross will hold an Adult CPR/AED and Infant and Child CPR/AED class on June 12, at the YMCA on Martha’s Vineyard at 57 Pequot avenue in Oaks Bluffs. The instruction on adult CPR/AED is from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and costs $50. The class continues with instruction on infant and child CPR portion until 3:30 p.m. at a cost of $60.
