The Crisis of Liberal Zionism is the name of Peter Beinart’s lecture and discussion on Friday, August 6, at 6:30 p.m. following the 6 o’clock Shabbat service at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center.

Mr. Beinart is a fellow at the New America Foundation and associate professor of journalism and political science at the City University of New York. He is also senior political writer for The Daily Beast, and a contributor to Time among other media.

Anybody serving up a cocktail of vodka, Red Bull, Hydrocodone, birdseed and stool softener this weekend? No? Well, guess again, because Carl Hiaasen is coming to town and in his world, Miami of course, a drink like that is just for starters. In fact, his new novel Star Island begins with the sudden demise of just such an über inbiber. It’s anybody’s guess where the ride will go from there. What’s not up for debate, though, is that the journey will be hilarious.

Poets Anthology

Cleaveland House Poets Anthology is among the books on display through tomorrow at the annual Poets House Showcase in New York city, today 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This is a display of all the poetry books published in the U.S. during the past year (2,164 titles), from micro-press chapbooks to CDs to volumes from major commercial publishers. Admission is free.

Former CIA lawyer Vicki Divoll will deliver a talk titled, Targeted Killing of Americans by the Obama Administration, on Wednesday, July 28 at 5:30 p.m. at the Chilmark Public Library. The focus of the talk will be whether the Executive Branch should be allowed to put a U.S. citizen on a CIA death list without judicial review. Recently, Anwar al Awlaki, a Muslim cleric born in New Mexico, has been added to the CIA list of suspected terrorists who may be captured or killed.

Jules Feiffer to Speak

On Wednesday, August 18, at 7 p.m., the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library will present an evening with Jules Feiffer, the renowned comic strip artist and author of the new memoir Backing Into Forward. A reception and book signing will follow the talk, and copies of the new book will be available for sale during the event.
