Farewell Sunday on Martha’s Vineyard

Martha’s Vineyard rested quietly in the golden haze of her warmth,

Her sandy thighs cooling in the wide blue-white wash of the sea.

The passions of the night had wearied her,

The Sound of Faulkner

Expect a few side trips to Yoknapatawpha County, but the main theme of Philip Weinstein’s lecture on William Faulkner will be the writer’s personal life.

Dr. Weinstein is a professor of literature at Swarthmore College and has written four books on Faulkner. Becoming Faulkner is his latest and it focuses on the Nobel Prize winner’s love life, relationship to alcohol and his difficult time in Hollywood.

The talk takes place at the old town hall in Aquinnah on Saturday, Sept, 11 at 5 p.m.

As part of the Martha’s Vineyard Museum’s archaeology lecture series, the museum welcomes Brendan Foley to discuss Robots and Ancient Shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea. Ancient shipwrecks littering the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea are direct evidence of trade and communication between the earliest civilizations. Dr. Foley will show us how scientists are deploying advanced submarine robots and sensors in collaboration with regional partners in Greece, Egypt, Cyprus, and Algeria.
