The middle school boys’ basketball team at the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School is a team without walls.
With the hiring of a new director of development and community relations, planned changes to its annual summer fundraiser, and a continued search for a new executive director, Martha’s Vineyard Community Services is spending its winter on a forward path.
“I’m excited; I’m looking forward to this next phase,” said Victor Capoccia, chair of the nonprofit organization’s board.
That next phase involves a greater push for outreach and connection in what is already an invaluable resource for many on the Island.

On Wednesday night, the girls’ hockey squad scored a decisive 10-3 victory over Nauset to pick up the final two points needed to send them to the playoffs, making it two years in a row that four high school sports teams have qualified for post-season play.
The girls’ hockey team joins the boys’ hockey squad and both basketball teams in qualifying for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association tournament.
The Martha’s Vineyard girls’ hockey team is now just one win away from a trip to the playoffs following a 4-2 win against Hanover this weekend. Head coach John Fiorito described the Vineyarders’ win as their best game of the year and a much-needed league victory.
