Gazette Chronicle: Lobster Tales

Lobster Tales

From the Vineyard Gazette editions of September, 1983:

John T. Hughes joined a distinguished team of ocean scientists from around the world for a trip to the once-closed nation of China. His passport was his career here on the Island, as a leading biologist studying Homarus americanus — the American lobster. His expertise is unequalled and often sought out by those interested in the raising of lobsters. Mr. Hughes built and has managed the state lobster hatchery in Oak Bluffs since its inception in 1949.

Light in Darkness

From earlier Christmas editions of the Gazette:

Chickadess perch on each wreath

Of greenery and underneath

The rabbits scamper past.

And nothing daunts the cheerful glow

Though falling sleet and driving snow

Come hissing on the blast.

True emblem of all pleasing things

The holly every winter brings

Amidst the frost and rime

Green leaves and ruddy berries ‘glow

And on humanity bestows

Run for the Money

From the 1972 Thanksgiving weekend edition of the Gazette:

“I guess,” said one down-Island boat-owner, as he stood in the clipped grass field in the light of the pale warm November sun, “we can afford to give over one day a year to the horsey set.” So he enjoyed himself, along with perhaps 500 others, at the race — the second annual Thanksgiving horse race sponsored by John and Kappy Hall on their West Tisbury farm.
