Gazette Chronicle: Lobster Tales

Lobster Tales

From the Vineyard Gazette editions of September, 1983:

John T. Hughes joined a distinguished team of ocean scientists from around the world for a trip to the once-closed nation of China. His passport was his career here on the Island, as a leading biologist studying Homarus americanus — the American lobster. His expertise is unequalled and often sought out by those interested in the raising of lobsters. Mr. Hughes built and has managed the state lobster hatchery in Oak Bluffs since its inception in 1949.

Talk of the Town

From a January, 1958 article by Colbert Smith:

One could well write a whole series of articles about the wintering gossip places for the residents of an Island town. They are legion, these places where people seem just to meet, exchange a few words, and pass on to their everyday pursuits.

January Journal

From Gazette editions of January, 1934:

The reeking of the sea all about the Island is something new in the way of natural phenomena to many of the younger Vineyarders. The word comes to us from the Scotch and the Icelanders, and it seems to describe as no other word the exhalation of vapor which takes place when the salt water is still relatively warm, and the temperature of the air drops far below zero.

Ship to Shore

From Gazette editions of January, 1934:

Many who did not expect to be awake to see the New Year ushered in, were aroused from their slumber at a little before 12, midnight, with the blowing of whistles by steamers and tugs in Vineyard Haven harbor. A general “hustle out” of the old year 1907 and a “welcome in” to the newborn year 1908 took place.
