Gazette Chronicle: Lobster Tales

Lobster Tales

From the Vineyard Gazette editions of September, 1983:

John T. Hughes joined a distinguished team of ocean scientists from around the world for a trip to the once-closed nation of China. His passport was his career here on the Island, as a leading biologist studying Homarus americanus — the American lobster. His expertise is unequalled and often sought out by those interested in the raising of lobsters. Mr. Hughes built and has managed the state lobster hatchery in Oak Bluffs since its inception in 1949.

At Loggerheads

From November, 1985 Gazette editions:

U.S. Congressman Gerry Studds told a crowd of more than 100 in Tisbury that on the way to the Vineyard he saw a rainbow. From the sound of how things went in Washington the previous week, he needed it. The gloomy news of a federal budget still suffering from chronic imbalance and Coast Guard belt-tightening measures that left the coast unprotected from drug running and illegal fishing fit right in with the gray day.

Gifts from the Sea

From a 1961 Gazette edition:

It was quite recently that the conversation among a group of representative men was pertaining to the valuation of real estate for taxation purposes. One man in the group said: “The biggest part of the houses in the town of ________ were built of lumber picked up on the beaches.”

Bounded by Nature

From Gazette editions of October, 1960:

In one of the major real estate transactions of the year, involving the future of the Edgartown golf course and of golf as it has been played there since 1928, the course is about to pass from the ownership of Cornelius Lee to the Edgartown Golf Club Inc. Mr. Lee stepped down from the presidency last summer, to be succeeded by Robert Brown Jr.
