The Gazette library seems to have files on any topic. Some are slim (Finnish prefabs, for example). Others are so fat they have spilled over into second and third envelopes. The Red Stocking file is just such a case. The envelopes are thick with clippings and creased from use. They have surprising weight in the palm of the hand.

Town Administrator Is Announced

Tisbury voters this week waded through the special town meeting with little debate, approving the bulk of the articles under consideration, among them a barking dog bylaw, new sewer and septage regulations and a professional enhancement fund for Island teachers.

A bare quorum of about 100 residents came to the meeting Tuesday night at the Tisbury School gymnasium. Town moderator Deborah Medders took the podium only a few minutes past the scheduled starting time.

Citing what they believe are missteps and backtracking by Steamship Authority management, Dukes County commissioners this week criticized SSA managers for their imprudence and pointedly questioned the boat line's priorities.

"There seems to be denial and avoidance, and my gut tells me that something isn't working right," said commissioner Paul Strauss.

Passengers May Stay in Vehicles on Ferry Crossing, Board Rules

The Steamship Authority board of governors overruled senior management yesterday and abandoned a controversial new policy that would have barred people from staying in their cars while on board the ferries.

The boat line governors instead approved a policy to simply advise passengers to leave their cars and to improve safety below decks through an expanded set of fire prevention measures.

On the Islander: Ferry Riders Say Security Policy Will Not Float

On Tuesday morning the mezzanine deck of the Islander filled quickly: the tables went first, then the bench seating. The passengers went above - stopping for conversation or to buy coffee - and back down the starboard side, toting shopping bags and luggage and more than a few dogs.

Dukes County sheriff Michael McCormack confirmed this week that he called for state police to investigate allegations of officer collusion in two separate inmate beatings at the Dukes County House of Correction.

Mr. McCormack asked for the investigation last November after an inmate charged that correctional officers had been involved in two assaults last year. He said the investigation could be concluded by the end of this month.
