Volunteer Celebrates Birthday
With Food Bank Fundraiser
Edgartown resident Herb Foster, whose real birthday is Jan. 31, is celebrating his 80th birthday on Saturday, Jan. 26 with his second annual hot dog cookout and fundraiser for the Island Food Pantry. The party is Saturday, Jan. 26, from 4 to 9:30 p.m. at Mr. Foster’s home at 15 Edgewood Drive (Sandy Valley), Edgartown.
The Safe Haven Project got four aces last Saturday night in Oak Bluffs when more than a hundred friends and supporters showed up for a couple hours of gambling.
The event, a first for the nonprofit organization, was Casino Night at the Oyster Bar Grill on Circuit avenue.
Blackjack dealers wore stiff white shirts and dealt like the professionals from Foxwoods. “Oh, they are all local,” said Deanna Ahearn Laird, a longtime supporter of Safe Haven and volunteer on the camp committee.
The Big Chili Contest
If you’ve been bragging about your secret family recipe, and know you have the chili the world has been waiting for, now’s your chance to prove it.
Join some of the best chili chefs around on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Portuguese-American Club in Oak Bluffs for the 22nd Annual mvyradio Big Chili Contest.
Island Grown Gourmets
The Island Grown Initiative brings together the culinary arts students from Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and chef Dan Sauer from the Outermost Inn to prepare a winter meal using local ingredients. The event is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. at the high school.

When Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon, the story of a rape and murder told from three perspectives, was released in 1950, it won the Gold Lion at the Venice Film Festival and has since received some of the most gushing reviews of all time from Western critics. But the head of the Japanese production company which had coughed up just $5,000 for the film’s budget disliked what he saw so much, he took his name off the credits. Japanese critics called it complicated and boring, and they worried about the swear words.
