English Conversation

The Edgartown library has begun a winter semester of free English conversation classes, led by Nancy Gardella. The class meets on Tuesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. at Edgartown town hall. Class dates are Jan. 29; Feb. 5, 12 and 19; and March 4, 11 and 18.

The Bodhi Path of Martha’s Vineyard will host a weekend teaching series with the Venerable 5th Dilyag Sabchu Rinpoche called Calm Abiding Meditation: A Mind Transformed on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 26 and 27 from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 4 p.m. both days. The suggested donation is $15 to $20 per session.

Chicks With Poker Chips

The Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Network hosts a poker afternoon on Sunday, Jan. 27, at The Wharf in Edgartown. From 1 to 4 p.m. Linda Gandel, director of owner relations at the Harbor View Hotel, will share her Texas Hold ’em poker skills. Admission is $15, and no registration is necessary.

The network is a professional businesswomen’s group on Martha’s Vineyard, providing continuing education and networking opportunities.

“Book clubs are frustrating affairs,” says Philip Weinstein, a professor of English at Swarthmore College who will be running one of these irritating to-dos starting Thursday in Aquinnah and traveling through five town libraries during the spring. “But they’re provocative, too,” he qualifies, sipping tea in the brightly-lit front room of his Aquinnah home. Mr. Weinstein hopes this will be particularly true of the up-coming discussions, which will take in five novels dealing with race in the American experience.
