One of the authors of America According to Connor Gifford, a book by a young Nantucket man who writes in the prologue how blessed he is to have Down syndrome, will be speaking at the Vineyard Haven Public Library next Friday, May 7, at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and all are welcome.
An Ohio native, he took many mainstream classes, and fell in love with history years before he graduated from high school is 2002. He now lives year-round on Nantucket.
Storyteller extraordinaire Susan Klein begins a new session of her popular memoir organization and writing workshop, Spice of Life. The eight-week course will meet, she says, “at twilight,” 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays, May 6 through June 24 at the Tisbury Senior Center.
Through her courses, many people have recorded stories of their life experiences, for fun, for their family, or for posterity.

A free introductory program on genealogy will be presented at the Edgartown Public Library at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, by the Vineyard chapter of the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists.
The program includes an overview on how to begin researching, introducing the types of charts used in genealogy and how to fill them out. Topics to be covered include the values and perils of Internet research, and accessing other genealogical sources, including those at the library.

First Aid Training
The American Red Cross will hold an Adult CPR/AED and First Aid class on May 8 at the YMCA on Martha’s Vineyard at 57 Pequot avenue in Oaks Bluffs, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cost is $50 for CPR only, or $60 to add first aid training and certification. Tomorrow, hundreds of bicycle riders will travel to the Island for a spring tradition called Ride the Vineyard, a fund-raising bicycle ride that provides help for 19,000 people who have multiple sclerosis in four New England states (Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont).
Breakfast Awaits
Next Friday morning is the annual St. Andrew’s Church May breakfast fundraiser, from 7 to 9 a.m. at the parish hall on the corner of Winter and North Summer streets in Edgartown.
A tradition of more than 50 years, this breakfast is a chance to gather your family, friends and coworkers to celebrate spring on the Vineyard with a homestyle country breakfast with farm fresh eggs donated by Morning Glory Farm. The cost is $8 for adults; children under six are free. All proceeds benefit Island Charities.
