Rosemary Gambino, owner of Rosecuts Salon on Causeway Road in Vineyard Haven, is spearheading a Vineyard effort to collect hair, fur and wool trimmings and nylons to aid in the cleanup of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that has spewed millions of gallons of crude oil since the April 20 explosion.
Open Auditions
Auditions for A Midsummer Night’s Dream are on Saturdays, May 15 and 22, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days, at the Vineyard Playhouse. Director M.J. Bruder Munafo is seeking young, nonequity actors of all ethnic backgrounds, with access to housing on Martha’s Vineyard.
Arrive at the audition and sign up for an appointment that day. Everyone who comes to the audition will be seen. Actors should come prepared to perform a short (under two minutes) Shakespearean monologue from any play.
Fly-fishing and casting instruction for all levels is being offered in a workshop on Saturday, May 15, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club in Edgartown.
Learn the basics every fly-fisher needs, from knot-tying and fish-handling, to casting, techniques and tips, presented by John Kollett and Sandra Demel. You will be able to handle equipment and start saltwater fly-fishing right away.
Bands Play On
You’d think that with all the planning that goes into a new project — a feature film at that — filmmaker Taylor Toole might set aside his other work and focus on the task at hand. But fresh off a grand prize win for his 2009 feature Mow Crew at Connecticut’s Kent Film Festival, and a series of screenings at the Capawock Theatre of his recent short featuring Island skateboarder Nick Briggs, Mr. Toole has set to work organizing a casting call for a film he plans to shoot on-Island this summer.
Mexican Night
The sixth grade class at West Tisbury School is hosting a Mexican Night dinner buffet fundraiser on Friday, May 14, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury’s village center.
All are welcome to enjoy a menu prepared by Tea Lane Catering with a beef taco bar, veggie enchiladas, rice, beans, and a chips and salsa station.
