Gone are the grownup gatekeepers of movie merit — kids are the audience for the weekly Cinema Circus films, so kids are our reviewers. Each week the Gazette and the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival bring you the big view from the smaller viewers with weekly kid critics.

Today summer kid Eva Stanley reviews The View from Above, a program of shorts which screens (along with plenty of larger-than-life children’s activities) on Wednesday, August 11, at 5 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center (a prelude to dinner and a movie for the grownups):

The ninth annual Chicken Alley Art and Collectibles Sale is this Sunday, August 15, from 1 to 5 p.m. under the tent at 38 Lagoon Pond Road in Vineyard Haven.

At this popular summer sale, the Thrift Shop is transformed into an art gallery extraordinaire, with oil and watercolor paintings, drawings, collages and prints by artists well-known and unknown. Vintage clothing and jewelry, as well as collectibles of all varieties, are snapped up in this once-a-year sale.

Art on North Water

North Water Gallery will open a show for Michael Frith and Ray Ellis with an artist reception on Thursday, August 12 from 5 to 7 p.m.

An internationally celebrated watercolorist, Michael Frith shares his passion for sailing and the beauty of the sea through his paintings. His book Yacht features his works paired with quotations and writings by several notable sailing enthusiasts.

Growing up, Grace Potter always had a strong taste for celebrity. She remembers wishing she’d some day just morph into Ariel, of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. When it started to look as if coronation was out of the question, she embarked on another path to fame, joining up with some college buddies to form the band Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.

Find your comedic voice and take your ideas from page to stage in a four-day intensive comedy writing and performing workshop with Emmy-winning original Saturday Night Live writer Anne Beatts. The workshop will culminate in a live performance following the Saturday family matinee.

A memorial service for Peter Appeldoorn Mead, who died on Jan. 28, 2010, in Grenada, West Indies, will be held on Thursday, August 12, at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Church, 51 Winter street in Edgartown. Peter’s friends are invited to attend.
