Daughter of super god Zeus and the Harvest goddess Demeter, young Persephone went out for a stroll one day and, as the story goes, was suddenly abducted by Hades, god of the underworld. The earth beneath her feet literally opened up and swallowed her.
Zeus, it turns out, was a bit of a laissez-faire father. He didn’t even notice his daughter had disappeared. Mom took up the fight alone visiting a drought upon the world until her daughter was returned.
The scent of mothballs had no chance to cling to Chris Abbot. Last year he retired from his teaching job, which included directing the annual school play at the Tisbury School. But only a few weeks ago, school principal Richie Smith inveigled him to return to the boards for Mr. Abbot’s third pass, rolled out this past weekend, of the musical Bye Bye Birdie.
Anyone affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia will be interested in a Monday video series featuring the highly regarded expert and presenter Teepa Snow. Ms. Snow is known for being funny in a very respectful way in order to humanize this debilitating disease. Friends, family members and caregivers of any age can learn from these videos how to better communicate with or relate to those suffering from dementia.

Young Poet Awards
The 2011 Promising Young Poets contest has named four winners and two runners-up in its second annual contest for high school poets.
This years winners are Jess Dupon from the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School, and Jordan Wallace, Claudia Taylor and Lizzie Kelleher from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.
Runners-up are Truda Silberstein, from the regional high school and Oscar Thompson form the charter school.
