Art and Commerce Unite
Every once in awhile even an artist must stop and smell the numbers. Business acumen and self-promotion are essential in getting one’s work out into the public eye. But how to go about this, especially when the day is short and the bulk of it should be spent on the art of creation?
On Monday, April 11 from 6 to 8 p.m., Featherstone Center for the Arts and Vineyard Voice are hosting a panel to discuss the hows and whys of getting savvy with the numbers, advertising and social media.
Living Beyond War
Living Beyond War by Winslow Myers will be the subject of a book discussion group taking place on Sunday, April 10 at 5 p.m. at the Unitarian Chapel, 238 Main street in Vineyard Haven. A second discussion will be held on April 17.
The discussions are in preparation for Mr. Myers’ visit to the Island on May 15.
For more details, call 508-693-8210.
Horseshoe Crabs Get Busy
Everything you wanted to know about horseshoe crabs but were afraid to ask, in particular their mating habits, will be revealed at the Chilmark Library on Wednesday, April 13 at 5:30 p.m.
Art in the Stacks presents an exhibit at the Vineyard Haven Public Library of acrylic paintings by Joan Walsh. The exhibit will be on display during the month of April.
Ms. Walsh was born in Ireland where she attended the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. Her work was exhibited in the Peoples Art Exhibition in Dublin and she participated in group shows in the Bank of Ireland Exhibition Center.
Kids and Medication
On Thursday, April 7 Martha’s Vineyard Community Services will host a talk entitled Medication and Kids: How Do We Decide?
The talk is designed to answer some of the many questions concerning this issue including worries over giving medications to a child and what to do if someone tells you your child needs to be on medication because they are overactive or aggressive.
The talk will be given by Dr. Dominic Maxwell who has been with MVCS since 2009.
Time to stand up and be counted - for the arts.
The Martha’s Vineyard Arts and Culture Collaborative is beginning a census in order to create an inventory of those involved in arts and culture on the Island. At the same time the collaborative is prospecting for ideas about what initiatives could offer the greatest benefit to the arts community of the Island.
Getting counted doesn’t hurt at all, either. Merely fill out a survey online at marthasvineyardarts.org.
