Stone Wall Show

Photographer Mariana Cook first noticed the timeless beauty of stone walls when her neighbor’s cows broke through the one that separates their properties in Chilmark.

“I realized how beautiful the wall was, and started wondering about who built it, and how the stones [were put together],” she said.

This spring Kristen Palma decided to buy a little house for sale on Ocean View Farm Road in Chilmark.

“We rented a house just down the street right before Paul got sick,” she said. “It was a strange coincidence that this house came up for sale. I think it was one of those things that was just meant to be.”

After 10 and 17 years of living on the Island, respectively, Tanya Augoustinos and Maria Westby were thinking of moving off-Island. They needed a change. The arts scene in the wintertime was unsatisfying, and their day jobs were getting a little dull.

“We were ready to get out of here,” Ms. Westby said. “We were wondering, how do we change our lives? It was either move on or bring something here.”

Kids’ Writing Workshop

Child writers unite. Mathea Morais, Island author and head of the writing lab at the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School, is offering two reading and writing workshops for kids age 9 through 14 at the West Tisbury Library. The first weeklong workshop is July 16 through 20 from 10:45 a.m. to noon. The second workshop is August 20 through 24, also at 10:45 a.m. to noon.

Spindrift Marionettes bring out their lively marionette puppets to perform The Magic Teakettle at the Grange Hall on July 17 at 3 p.m. The Magic Teakettle is an adaptation of a Japanese folk tale about a tenuki, a magical creature who can turn into anything.
