The regional high school golf team took 10th place of 12 in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association state tournament Monday. The match was played at the Wyantenuck Country Club in Great Barrington. Senior cocaptain Matt Marchand had the lowest score for the Vineyard, shooting a 79 to finish 20th overall. Senior cocaptain Kat deBettencourt shot an 81 to finish 28th.
An online application that’s taking the high school by storm this school year is making it even more difficult to be a teen. Ask.fm, a website and online application that allows users to ask each other questions anonymously, arrived on the Island late this summer through Twitter, just in time to greet the first day of school.
Rising costs of special education services and cuts to federal grants are driving a dramatic increase in education spending for Vineyard schools in the coming fiscal year.
Schools superintendent Dr. James H. Weiss presented an operating budget to the all-Island school committee Wednesday night totaling $5.4 million.

Stephen A. Duffy has been named the next head of school at Falmouth Academy by a unanimous vote of the school’s board of trustees. Currently, Mr. Duffy is upper school principal of Rutgers Preparatory School in Somerset, N.J. He will assume the Falmouth Academy position on July 1, 2014.
It was the first chilly day of fall and West Tisbury middle schoolers had their hands stuffed into their pockets as they waited outside for the school day to begin. “Can we go into the gym?” one ventured to Donna Lowell-Bettencourt, the new principal who seemed like she’d always been the principal. “It’s cold.”
