The first official week of Holmes Hole Sailing Association’s 39th season offered the best and worst conditions.

The Holmes Hole Sailing Association begins another season, striking a balance of hot competition and warm friendship. Every Thursday evening and Sunday afternoon until Labor Day, as many as 25 boats will meet in outer Vineyard Haven harbor to race for fun and bragging rights.

The Gannon and Benjamin boatyard on the Vineyard Haven harbor was the scene of a festive launch Monday for a new design created by the venerable wooden boat yard. The Sheldrake is a gaff sloop daysailer and Nat Benjamin’s 85th original design.

Rachel Miller, a co-founder of the Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean, is the guest presenter at the Sail Martha’s Vineyard dinner lecture on Wednesday, April 8, at 6 p.m. at the Black Dog Tavern.

Tisbury selectmen approved a host of new harbor regulations covering everything from dinghy length to docking time limits during their Tuesday meeting. They also set new rates for mooring fees, which will increase by five per cent across the board for commercial, town lease, and private moorings, beginning with the current billing cycle.

The Martha’s Vineyard detachment of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will be offering a 10-week Boating Skills and Seamanship (BS&S) course beginning Wednesday, March 25.
