Recently I returned to the Island from an extended business trip and have just come across a letter from the Vineyard Peace Council in the Gazette for Friday, August 1, for the peace gathering for the bombing of Hiroshima.

Maybe we need to start a petition asking Arthur T. Demoulas to buy out both of the Stop & Shop stores on the Island.

The Oak Bluffs citizens’ beach committee was formed this year to address the problems of our beaches, some of which were highlighted in a recent letter to the editor.

I always looked forward to the farmers’ market during the summer and visiting with Ethel Sherman and Ralph, if he was there. The biggest thrill one summer was being invited to their home to see Ralph’s amazing garden.

The old building which has stood for many years at the foot of Daggett street is being moved to a new site. Its destination lies up Pierce avenue, along which the ancient structure is now moving with Edward T. Vincent and his crew in charge of operations.

By all accounts this has not been an unusually bad year for tick-borne illnesses on the Island. The dry cool summer may have helped — not just in keeping the tick population down, but in keeping hikers and gardeners more fully covered when venturing outdoors.
