Lyndon Johnson Pereira is all but forgotten. Just a handful of the Island’s some 3,000 Brazilian residents have heard of him. Other pioneering Brazilians who came in the late 1980s and early 1990s are now Island personalities, including Elio Silva, owner of the Tisbury Farm Market and other stores, and Paco Santana, a painter.

Correction
A story about The Birthday Club in the Tuesday Gazette incorrectly reported that the Island Food Pantry received government funds. The pantry does purchase more food than is donated, but without any government assistance.

Melanie Dickson of Vineyard Haven announces the birth of a son, Michael James Dickson, born on August 21, 2009, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Michael weighed seven pounds at birth.

Alex and Amy Finkelstein of Wellesley, announce the birth of a son, Andrew John Finkelstein, born on August 26, 2009, at Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston. Andrew weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces, and is welcomed by big sister Emma.
