A consultant told the Tisbury selectmen this week that the town police force has made progress under the leadership of interim police chief Daniel Hanavan, who took over following the sudden departure of chief John Cashin last May.

“Dan has done a terrific job as acting chief. His heart is in it. He has made some tough decisions. He cares about the officers and he cares about the town, and I am quite impressed with the transition,” said Robert Wasserman, who has served as a consultant to police forces here and in other countries.

Tisbury town leaders hope the long saga of the Garde family’s chicken-killing dogs is over. But if his recent actions are any guide, Ken Garde thinks differently.

The selectmen have banned three of the family’s dogs from the town. A judge has twice backed their actions. The town now plans to enforce the order to get the dogs out of Tisbury.

And Mr. Garde’s response? He recently reregistered the dogs.

He also took out papers to run again for his long-held seat on the town board of health.

And just a few weeks ago they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

“When she first saw me, she was a little bit surprised. I either had a necktie or a piece of rope for a belt,” Mr. Fischer recalled while seated with his bride in the dining room of their house overlooking Beetlebung Corner.

Three different applicants recently made the rounds of selectmen: Ron Minkin of Martha’s Vineyard Transport LLC, Barry Lopes of Native Island Tours and Jason Correia of Castaway Coach.
