The cat population at the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard remains the same as last week. We have Dixie, the beautiful orange, white and black calico; Binx, the black and white sweet cat with the long white whiskers; and Phoebe, the orange and white cat who loves her basket to curl up in. Frankly we can’t understand why these three cats have not been adopted — they are real beauties. And then there are Cyrus and Miss Misty, who are fast becoming the shelter mascots. They are allowed to come out of their cages and greet people who come to visit.

After long controversy and indecision, Tisbury voters on Tuesday approved the sale of beer and wine in the town’s restaurants.

Tisbury selectmen now will be empowered to issue as many as 19 year-round licenses and an unlimited number of seasonal licenses for the sale of beer and wine.

Proponents of beer and wine sales have been pushing the measure for five years. When all the votes were tallied on Tueday night, they had won by a clear margin: 881-747.

Last Friday, children at the Martha’s Vineyard Boys’ and Girls’ Club received copies of the Funhunters Scavenger Hunt. “Oh, we know all about the Vineyard,” they said, beginning an animated and interesting discussion about where they might find specific items such as a “mermaid’s purse,” a plane on a grassy airstrip, and a church that has no walls. These Vineyard youngsters then launched the Funhunters Scavenger Hunt on their next scheduled outing.

Look Good, Feel Better

The American Cancer Society, Maggie’s Salon and the Breast Cancer Support Group are hosting a free Look Good, Feel Better event on Wednesday, May 5, at the Vineyard Haven Public Library from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

A similar event last May for women who have been recently diagnosed with cancer was very well received by the 16 participants. This year’s event also brings each participant a top of the line cosmetics gift bag, demonstrations with makeup and hair accessories, including wigs, scarves and caps.
