Jessica Forend of Oak Bluffs has competed in the Intercollegiate Dressage National competition for the past last three years as part of Johnson & Wales Intercollegiate Dressage Team — and she is the first rider to ever win her division each year.
Ms. Forend was champion in the first level division in the individual contest that took place as part of the national competition on April 24 and 25.
The Island’s youngest fish ermen were treated to a quiet, still morning last Saturday. The anglers came early to Duarte’s Pond in West Tisbury to compete in the annual spring Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club trout tournament. The club hosted the event with a large crew of volunteers. Youngsters were treated to hot dogs on the grill.
The club had stocked the pond with plenty of large trout, but it was the native pickerel that gave fishermen the best catch. Native catfish were also plentiful.
The walls of the Unitarian Universalist Society church were lined with anxious teenagers last Friday night, as the group of 10 high school poets sat waiting to take the podium to read their work aloud to friends and family filling the pews.
Mayfest
Mayfest will be held next Saturday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Island Children’s School, on 5 Halcyon Way, off Old County Road in West Tisbury (next to the elementary school). Activities for children include pony rides, bouncy house, face painting, lots of games and prizes, while adults can shop the silent auction tables for incredible items and lots of gift certificates for Island stores, restaurants and services.
The University of Colorado alumni recently elected Bruce Ellis Doten of Vineyard Haven as 50th anniversary reunion chairman of the class of 1960. Mr. Doten, who also served as 45th Class reunion chairman, is presiding over two days of golden anniversary alumni activities on the Bouldercampus surrounding the university’s 121st commencement on May 6 and 7, and will lead the 2010 commencement procession.
Lyme Fair
The Southcoast Lyme and Tick Borne Disease Awareness Group will present an educational fair on Lyme disease on Sunday, May 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Westport Grange at 931 Main Road, Westport. This event is free and open to the public.
