Tisbury selectmen this week approved the first four beer and wine licenses for town restaurants.
In sharp contrast to the long and contentious process which preceded them, the first four hearings were remarkably short, and all went through without a voice raised in objection.
The mood was buoyant Wednesday night, as a small group of high school students gathered with friends to share a meal and conversation. Handshakes and hugs passed as greetings at the door, and when everyone had settled, one student pulled a long piece of cloth from her belongings.

Catch and Release
Fishing for striped bass from the shore was tough last weekend, at least for those competing in the 19th annual Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club striped bass catch and release tournament.
Of the 124 fishermen who competed, they caught and released 100 fish. The numbers are down both in contestants and in fish. Last year 193 fishermen competed.
It requires a little extra faith to open a new business on the Vineyard. There’s the feast-and-famine seasonality of its economy, the often ingrained shopping habits of its residents, the tendency to look to the mainland for choices and prices that the Island cannot match.
Oak Bluffs wastewater officials on Tuesday unveiled a $2.58 million sewer expansion plan along County Road between the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and town fire station, which would connect some 450 lots to the town sewer system, 119 of which are currently vacant.
Wastewater superintendent Joe Alosso presented the plan at the selectmen’s regular meeting; he said the expansion is intended to dramatically reduce nitrogen loading in the Lagoon Pond. Although the sewer plan has been discussed in the past, this was the first time the plans were made public.
