Suicide Prevention
Island Elderly Housing will host a community forum on suicide prevention on Wednesday, Oct. 27 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The forum, presented by the Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition, is open to all.
Suicide is a very real problem among our youth and elderly, particularly in the dark days of winter. The forum will feature a conversation with Dr. Sally Spencer-Thomas, an internationally renowned clinical psychologist, mental health advocate and, significantly, a suicide survivor.
Medicare
All seniors who have Medicare Part D Prescription Drug coverage should review their current plan to see if it remains cost-effective and has all of their drugs for 2011. Medicare posts formularies, premiums and drug costs for all Part D plans for next year on the Medicare Web site, medicare.gov, on or about Oct. 15.
Unless you are a Prescription Advantage member or meet a limited number of special cases criteria, you can only change your Part D plan once a year between Nov. 15 and Dec. 31.
The Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of the second annual business awards, the Martha’s. Winners were determined by a vote of the membership and are as follows:
The Vineyard Gazette was named weekly Newspaper of the Year in its circulation category by the New England Newspaper and Press Association yesterday, the top prize in the annual newspaper competition among weekly and small daily newspapers in New England.
The Gazette also won a prestigious Publick Occurrences Award for Outstanding Journalism. The award went to Gazette senior writer Mike Seccombe for his series of stories on offshore wind development last year.

The nine little kittens that were born at the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard a few weeks ago will be ready to find homes on Oct. 27, so if you would like a kitten, come early on that day and pick your kitten. Some of them, have double paws. The shelter opens at 8:30 a.m.
College Bound
Harry J. Cipolla, son of Mr. James Cipolla of Oak Bluffs, began his first year at Saint Michael’s College in September. Mr. Cipolla graduated from Cohasset Junior Senior High School before coming to Saint Michael’s, which is located in Burlington, Vt.
