In the nearly two decades since I’ve been writing about Island ghosts there are a few I’ve kept mum about. I did this for two reasons. The accounts were so scary they seemed implausible, and I also didn’t want to implicate people and properties. Even if I used pseudonyms and pseudo directions, these ghosts guaranteed that their hosts could never sell their homes or even invite anyone over for coffee.
Calling all would be seamen and women, the Coast Guard Auxiliary wants you.
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard. The Auxiliary directly supports the Coast Guard in all missions except military and law enforcement. It supports the boating public through its programs in public education, boating and marine safety, homeland security and vessel safety checks among many others.
In Tisbury : Dress up for the haunted house, games, snacks at the Tisbury School’s Halloween ‘funraiser” Friday and Saturday, 4 to 7 p.m., admission is $3. On Sunday, the Vineyard Haven Public Library opens with free treats, crafts and costumes noon to 4 p.m. Trick or treating on Main street starts at 3 p.m., while revelers can find refuge, warmth and treats free at St. Augustine’s Church in Vineyard Haven from 4 to 9 p.m.
Walk With Ghosts
Get in the spirit of Halloween by visiting various Island spirits — ghosts that is. Yes, they are out there and have been haunting Martha’s Vineyard for generations.

Halloween Party
Spook alert! The annual Halloween Party at the Ag Hall in West Tisbury will be on Sunday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. with games, prizes, snacks and the scary hayride. It’s all brought to you by West Tisbury Parks and Recreation. For details, call 508-696-0147.
Vineyard Haven Ghosties
Once again Vineyard Haven businesses are getting into the ghoulish spirit this Halloween.
Beginning at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31, Main street will be host to those things that go bump in the night. So come all you vampires and Voldemorts, you witches and warlocks, you ghosts and goblins. The fun starts off with a parade beginning at the Mansion House and then by foot, wing, cape, carpet or claw it heads down to the Waterside Market.
