The May 26 Oak Bluffs special election was not legal, town administrator Michael Dutton has confirmed. In an e-mail to the Gazette Mr. Dutton said the town failed to post a warrant seven days prior to the election.
“I had assumed the posting of the warrant for the town meeting identifying the election date would satisfy any posting requirement,” the town administrator wrote. “Evidently there is some confusion over who is responsible for posting. Since it’s a selectmen’s warrant, I take full responsibility for the error.”

A cookout for a den of Vineyard Cub Scouts and their parents on Thursday night had an exciting surprise ending when two young scouts discovered an old treasure box deep in the woods.
The rusted World War II-era metal box contained a cache of gold and jewelry, knives and an old revolver. The box and its contents were turned over to the Oak Bluffs police.
After a long winter of trying to beat the red lights between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, Islanders can look forward to a summer without traffic signals on Beach Road. On Tuesday highway department supervisor Richard Combra confirmed that stoplights at the two bridges on Sengekontacket would be gone for Memorial Day weekend as work wraps up on their reconstruction this week.
To address the need of postnatal support a group of Island moms, doctors, maternity nurses, midwives, health, yoga and childcare practitioners, and members of the Martha’s Vineyard Family Network have created a free monthly series entitled Nurturing Our Babies and Ourselves, an educational series to enhance the parenting journey.
The series takes place on successive Thursdays, beginning June 2, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Family Center located in the Regional High School.
