SylvieBags Returns

After a three year hiatus, SylvieBags is back in business. Those who have been missing her colorful vintage fabric handbags can look forward to viewing new designs at the Vineyard Artisans Festivals this summer (Sundays in July, Thursdays in August, plus the Labor Day weekend show).

Additionally, a selection of her vintage fabric pillows is available at the North Water Gallery in Edgartown. For details, call 508-693-0561 or visit online sylviebags.com.

We all like to hear stories and many of us like to tell them too. But something happens when you’re in the hands of a master storyteller, one who has honed her craft over years of telling stories and teaching storytelling too.

Susan Klein will be telling her stories in her own magical way on Saturday, July 9 at the Martha’s Vineyard High School’s Performing Arts Center. The show begins at 7 p.m. and is a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard and is sponsored in part by Holmes Hole Builders.

The Holmes Hole Sailing Association continued its summer season of handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven harbor with a night race on June 30 and a Sound race on July 3.

Thursday night was a nice evening with a 15 knot west-southwest wind. Eleven boats posted for the 6 p.m. start at red nun 6. The course took the fleet to nun 4 at West Chop, then to green can 23a at East Chop and back to nun 6. The first leg was a broad reach on the port tack. After rounding the nun, a starboard reach and run to the can was followed by a beat to windward to the finish line.

Lambert’s Cove Beach, Seth’s Pond, Long Cove Pond and Tisbury Great Pond were all closed to swimming on Thursday after results from routine water testing revealed a spike in the bacteria enterococcus.

West Tisbury health agent John Powers said he expects the tests to be an anomaly and anticipated the beaches would be open again by Friday. He said the contamination at Lambert’s Cove may be in part due to a breach at James Pond.

From the streetfront, the Vineyard Arts Project appears to be another large house on Main street. There is no hint that past its picket fence is unfolding, in turn: life on the Texas-Mexico border; family drama at a racially-charged estate; and people singing and dancing about the financial crisis.
