At a groundbreaking ceremony last Saturday, Doug Ruskin, president of Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard, introduced Joe Fragosa Jr., his wife, Jennifer, and their five-year-old daughter, Briana.

Mr. Fragosa, 51, said he and his wife have been looking for a permanent home for seven years. He is an arborist who grew up on the Island. She is a water safety instructor.

A bill which has been quietly making its way through the state house could dramatically affect the future ownership of some of the Vineyard’s pristine barrier beaches, moving them from private hands to public.

The bill, which consists of just a single paragraph, relates to the barrier beaches that separate the Island’s Great Ponds from the ocean. Many of these beaches are privately owned and also are retreating into the ponds as they are eroded on their seaward side.

Please Adopt Us

This week the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard is featuring two beautiful calico cats — Cupid and Butter. Both came from the same home and are probably sisters. They are about three years old and look very much alike. Both have recently been spayed and are very friendly around children and good around dogs. They are really wonderful house cats and love attention. They do not have to be adopted together, but would be great company for each other. Won’t you please stop by and see these two sweet cats?

The Tisbury Street Fair, scheduled for this evening, has been postponed until Saturday evening due to weather.

It will begin at 6 p.m. in Vineyard Haven promising the same great food, face painting, climbing walls and lots more.

The town of Tisbury is turning 340 years old this year. Forty years ago the town decided the candles had become a bit too plentiful for a mere cake and the birthday bash known as the Tisbury Street Fair was born.
