The folks at Cinema Circus are gearing up for their first winter screening to be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center.
The event includes food, activities and, of course, a series of short films. And just as during the summer an early screening of the films is arranged with a young Island cineaste to give the real deal, kid’s-point-of-view on what's good, great and not so much.

Edith W. Potter of Chappaquiddick, a longtime conservationist who wrote the first zoning bylaws for Edgartown and was influential in saving South Beach and the Katama airfield, received her due recognition on Thursday when she was honored as this year’s recipient of the Spirit of the Vineyard Award.
The award is given annually to a person who has served for one or more nonprofit organizations on the Island, and whose work has made a difference to individuals and to the community as a whole.
Nutrient loading in coastal ponds has inevitably led town planners all across the Cape and Islands to the prospect of increased sewering. At a presentation on the Vineyard this week, Earle Barnhardt and Hilde Maingay of the Citizens for Economic and Ecological Sustainability of Falmouth offered a different vision. Rather than a centralized municipal solution, they offered a modular, personalized one.

That’s been the rule at In the Woods for the past 27 years, the eclectic woodcraft, rug, furniture, cooking wares and knickknack store in Edgartown. The store has stocked everything from woven wool socks from Afghanistan to sets of Noah’s Ark crafted in the backwoods of Maine. But at the end of the month the doors will close for good.
As Edgartown and West Tisbury prepare to appeal the Martha’s Vineyard Commission’s approval of the roundabout in superior court, the West Tisbury selectmen closely questioned the commission chairman this week about the project, including why it was not referred for review earlier in the process.
MVC chairman Chris Murphy appeared before the selectmen at their weekly meeting on Wednesday.
Aquinnah Town Meeting
Aquinnah selectmen have called a special town meeting for next Wednesday seeking voter approval for them to sign a lease with Vineyard Power for a solar project at the town landfill.
Moderator Michael Hebert will preside over the special session Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. at the old town hall. The solar lease is the only article on the warrant.
