Gideon Arrives
Emily and Keston Smith of West Tisbury announce the birth of a son, Gideon Keston Smith, born on Nov. 25, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Gideon weighed 7 pounds, 8 and one half ounces at birth.
The final Massachusetts Estuaries Project report on the health of Lagoon Pond was unveiled this week in Oak Bluffs, and the blunt diagnosis was summed up in two words: “significantly impaired.”
Dr. Brian Howes, technical director for the project, a joint venture of the state Department of Environmental Protection and the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, said that almost all of the 89 estuaries in southeastern Massachusetts are impaired. Lagoon Pond is no exception.
Leticia Arrives
Elisana Goncalves and Thiago Silva of Vineyard Haven announce the birth of a daughter, Leticia Souza Silva, born on Nov. 24 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Leticia weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces at birth. She joins big sister Tayna.
On Tuesday night there is a conversation at Offshore Ale in Oak Bluffs that rises above the workaday Amber-Ale-fired chatter about the big game or the latest political gaffe. Next to the bar, pianist Jeremy Berlin and guitarist Eric Johnson are carrying on what is undoubtedly the most interesting conversation of the night. Both are fluent in jazz.
Elizabeth B. Anderson and Timothy M. Moriarty, now of Florence, were married on Oct. 15 at Blackthorn Farm in West Tisbury in the barn Liz’s father built and where she spent her childhood tending to the horses and preparing for weekend shows.
Mrs. Moriarty is the daughter of Sally R. Anderson and Richard J. Anderson, both of West Tisbury, and her husband is the son of the Hon. and Mrs. Cornelius J. Moriarty 2nd of Edgartown and South Hadley.
Blue Cross Grant
The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation has awarded Dukes Country a $40,000 grant for health care enrollment assistance and referral programs focused on Spanish and Portuguese speaking communities. A total of $1.2 million was given to 24 organizations that promote the health care needs of uninsured and low-income residents.
