Deni Alton and Mark Alton of Oak Bluffs announce the birth of a son, Tyler Daniel Alton, born on Dec. 22, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Tyler weighed 8 pounds, 14 ounces at birth.
For Vineyarders and their visitors, it was a dream year for weather.
They enjoyed plenty of sunshine, with most of the Island’s rain falling at night. They also dodged some of the region’s most dramatic weather, including the remnants of a large hurricane and heavy snowstorms that landed elsewhere in New England.
Farmers saw their gardens flourish, only occasionally needing to irrigate. Charter fishing captains seldom had to cancel trips because of high winds or high seas, except for a few days during the fall striped bass and bluefish derby.
David Pothier and Chris Scott have been elected officers in the Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 11. The pair received the honors during a Change of Watch Ceremony held on Cape Cod this month.
Mr. Pothier of Oak Bluffs was elected vice flotilla commander for the Woods Hole and Martha’s Vineyard Flotilla, 11-2. He will also serve as detachment leader for the Martha’s Vineyard Auxiliary. Mr. Scott of Edgartown was appointed division staff officer for public affairs. He will assume public information responsibilities for the region.
The state’s highest court this week rejected a wide-ranging challenge to a power contract between Cape Wind Associates and the utility National Grid.
In a pair of decisions, the Supreme Judicial Court sided with the state Department of Public Utilities, which last year approved the contract calling for Cape Wind to sell 50 per cent of the wind project’s power to the large utility that serves millions of consumers in Massachusetts and three other northeast states.
A new restaurant may be coming to Main street Edgartown in the coming year.
Brothers Patrick and Ted Courtney told the Edgartown selectmen at their meeting Tuesday that they have preliminary plans to open a restaurant in the space currently occupied by In the Woods, which is closing this weekend. The Courtneys will lease the building from the Hall family beginning Jan. 1.
With Edgartown noticeably unrepresented, the Islandwide group responsible for negotiating a new franchise agreement with Comcast turned its attention this week to Vineyard neighborhoods other than Chappaquiddick that lack cable television service. Areas at issue include Indian Hill Road and Seven Gates in West Tisbury, and Quansoo, Middle Line Road and Meeting House Way in Chilmark.
