People receiving fuel assistance will get an additional $350 in federal funds this winter, according to the South Shore Community Action Council (SSAC), which administers the funds out of Plymouth.

So far this winter, recipients — many of them elderly — have been getting anywhere from $725 to $1,025 for the heating season. Eligibility is based on income and the size of the household.

As the Oak Bluffs selectmen grilled candidates for permanent town administrator Tuesday, one of the three hopefuls was not quite as apprehensive as the other two.

“Maybe I’m mellowing out in my old age,” said Robert Whritenour, “I seem to be leaving my stress behind on the boat.”

Mr. Whritenour has served as interim town administrator since July, during which time he has become a respected figure in Oak Bluffs. The selectmen, at the outset, acknowledged the slightly unusual nature of the proceedings.

Youth Hockey

The Ryan Mone Memorial Tournament, hosted by Martha’s Vineyard Youth Hockey, will be played at the MV Arena this weekend. Games begin this evening at 5 p.m. and continue Saturday, starting at 8 a.m. and Sunday at 7:30 a.m..

Last Saturday, the MV Peewees played Hetland to a 2-2 tie with Jacob Gunderson scoring first for the Vineyard and Justin Alexander potting the second goal.

On Sunday, the Mites took on 12-0 Nantucket in a double-header, falling 6-2 in the first game and holding the Whalers to a 4-4 tie in the second.

The boys’ basketball and hockey teams extended their win streaks this week as league play continued for the Vineyarders. Though the girls’ teams split their games, all of the varsity squads hold winning records at the season midpoint.

Megan Diane Avery-Zellner and Nathan Zellner of Oak Bluffs announce the birth of a daughter, Alice Caroline Avery-Zellner, born on Nov. 14, 2011, in Austin, Tex. Alice weighed 5 pounds, 10 ounces at birth and measured 17.5 inches.

Sock Hop on Saturday

The Chilmark PTO is holding a 50s-night fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 7 to 11 p.m. In addition to music and dancing, the evening will feature a silent auction, desserts and beverages. Auction items include a Grey Barn certificate, massages, sailing lessons, tennis lessons, Morning Glory Farm hayride, staycation at Menemsha Inn, weekend at Captain Flanders House and more.
