The Edgartown Council on Aging, also known as the Anchors, has a shiny new wood floor, the result of a generous gift from a local woman who died two years ago. And in the months ahead, the walls will be painted and the windows will be attended to as well.
The improvements are being paid for by the estate of Audry Richard, who grew up in town. The daughter of a fisherman, she was a sales clerk in local stores. Her husband, Edmond Richard, was a mechanic whose father was also an Edgartown fisherman. The couple had no children.
Bookstore browsers and readers of all ages, rejoice: Edgartown Books, one of the Island’s two bookstores, will open today under new ownership.
The Main street store, which was put on the market earlier this year, was purchased last week by Jeffrey and Joyce Sudikoff, Los Angeles residents who own a home in Edgartown. The sale of the building and the business closed last Friday, May 18.
The building was sold for $1.525 million; the sale of the business was not included in the price.
Oliver Filley has spent the last few months of his high school career focused on designing and making kite boards, a course of study that blends his passion with education and his future plans.
Oliver is one of 12 Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School seniors to complete senior projects this year, in which students devote three class blocks during a semester to a project that aligns with their interests. This year, senior projects ranged from art and music to nutrition and agriculture.

Catherine and Jeremiah McCarthy of Tisbury announce the birth of a son, Gannon William McCarthy, born on May 17, 2012 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Gannon joins brother Everon.
The Edgartown selectmen Monday approved a single tax rate of $3.43 for every $1,000 worth of property, representing a three cent increase from last year, the board of assessors said. The tax rate is still subject to final approval from the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.
Isabella Arrives
Jussar and Jackson Silva of Edgartown announce the birth of a daughter, Isabella Sampaio Silva, born on May 16, 2012 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Isabella weighed 9 pounds, 7 ounces at birth. She joins big brother Emmanuel.
