Cera Monique Garvin and Wesley Jared Gilpin of Aquinnah announce the birth of a daughter, Madelyn Elizabeth Garvin, born on July 6, 2012 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Madelyn weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces at birth.
Ruth Metell of Oak Bluffs was recognized by Rep. Tim Madden at the 28th Annual Heritage Day of Portugal celebration at the State House on June 5. Heritage Day recognizes members of the Portuguese American Community who are role models and outstanding contributors to their local communities. Ms. Metell is a Martha’s Vineyard native who worked at the Martha’s Vineyard National Bank and the Edgartown National Bank, and was named 2011 Senior Volunteer of the Year by the Oak Bluffs Senior Center. She has five children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Attic Sale
The West Tisbury Congregational Church’s annual attic and barn sale takes place on the church grounds Saturday, July 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
All year long church members collect, sort and clean sale items in preparation for this busy day. Collectibles range from enamelware to English bone china. Table linens mingle with garden tools, kayaks, bicycles, children’s games and small furniture pieces. All proceeds benefit the historic church.
The rain date will be Sunday, July 15, from 1 to 4 p.m.
Kids’ Writing Workshop
Child writers unite. Mathea Morais, Island author and head of the writing lab at the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School, is offering two reading and writing workshops for kids age 9 through 14 at the West Tisbury Library. The first weeklong workshop is July 16 through 20 from 10:45 a.m. to noon. The second workshop is August 20 through 24, also at 10:45 a.m. to noon.
Lake Tashmoo has been closed to shellfishing as of Wednesday afternoon due to the presence of a potentially toxic algae bloom.
Tisbury town administrator John Bugbee said Thursday that people should not shellfish in the body of water, and should dispose of all shellfish recently caught there, as there is no way of knowing how long the algae bloom has been in place.
Signs are posted along the shore.
Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs has been reopened to swimming after water samples taken Wednesday came back negative for elevated levels of bacteria.
The beach was ordered closed Tuesday night, following one test that revealed higher than allowable levels of enterococcus, organisms that may indicate the presence of bacteria found in sewage.
