With a long wait for on-Island health care in the past — though some frustration lingers — Island veterans and Providence VA Medical Center representatives met Wednesday night to discuss the sometimes complicated details of the new contract between the Providence VA and the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
Two stop signs and a crosswalk at the intersection of Main street and Woodland avenue in Vineyard Haven will be put in place after a well-attended public hearing at the selectmen’s meeting Tuesday night.
About 15 residents, many from Havenside apartments on Main street, came to the meeting to express concern over the intersection.
The former chairman of the Edgartown dredge committee was fined $5,000 by the State Ethics Commission for a conflict of interest violation stemming from an unauthorized dredging project in January.
According to a press release from the ethics commission issued Wednesday, Norman Rankow admitted to violating conflict of interest law when he directed the town dredge to perform work around a dock at a home on Witchwood avenue where he had served as general contractor. The dredge work on Jan. 13 was done without the proper federal, state and local permits.
This holiday weekend is the last full weekend for those competing in the 67th annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. Anglers will see the sunsets and note the sunrises, and quite a few will fish through the full three-day weekend, hoping to catch the largest striped bass, bluefish, bonito and false albacore.
Nearly 2,800 fishermen are registered in the contest. Of those, 300 are junior anglers.
A new Edgartown Public Library, approved by town voters and hinging on state funding, took a giant leap toward reality Thursday.
Edgartown was awarded a $5 million grant Thursday from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, one of eight towns to receive $41.8 million in construction grants from the state.
