A week ago more than 100 people from around the world beganarriving on the Vineyard. Most looked like regular folks, bearded or not, wearing jeans or skirts, sneakers and shoes. They could have been leaf peepers who took a wrong turn on their way to the Berkshires. But some wore flowing crimson robes, a visible sign that this group was up to something different.

More telling, though, was that they appeared more relaxed than most people. They didn’t pack as much stuff either.

On a recent Sunday morning, in a small office space near the Black Dog Bakery Cafe, Elder Aric Mullins and Elder Garret Rushforth sat with other members of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints and listened to a sermon about temptation and making the right choices. Nearly a year ago, Elders Mullins (20) and Rushforth (19) left the stability and security of their homes in Indiana and Utah, respectively, to embark on a two-year mission.

The annual Barn Raisers’ Ball is this Saturday, Nov. 3, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. The event is a celebration harkening back to when the hall was built and the whole community pitched in to help. Bring a dessert to share. Otherwise, the night is free,

Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish provide the music and the dancing goes until 10 p.m.

ACE MV and Cape Cod Community College are teaming up to offer a course in child psychology. The three-credit course, PSY 201-67, will be taught on-Island, beginning Nov. 1 at the regional high school. General psychology (PSY 101 or equivalent) is a prerequisite for this course.

The middle school track season came to a close last Friday in the annual five-school meet, held at the regional high school track. The West Tisbury girls picked up their second season-ending win in two years, finishing with 51 points. Oak Bluffs scored 35, holding off Edgartown (30 points). Tisbury finished with six points, and the charter school notched five. In the boys’ meet, Edgartown brought home the victory for their school with 59 points. West Tisbury took second with 29 points, just four more than third-place finisher Oak Bluffs.

On Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 10:30 a.m., the Josiah Quincy Elementary School in Boston will dedicate the auditorium to the late Mary Elizabeth Shugrue, known as Molly. A former Chilmark summer resident, Molly was a student at the Quincy School from 1989 until 1993. Her passion for the stage began as a member of the school’s Chinese Dance Troupe, which performs at Chinese New Year celebrations and other Boston functions.
